Sitting South, what would be your lead?

► Solutions

The best lead according to Jérôme Rombaut

The most efficient lead which will also please your partner. Score: 20/20 ✔️

Indeed, sometimes you can lead from Ace-King-third to try to see the dummy, but rather in the cases where you don’t really have a long suit to lead. Score: 15/20

It is tempting to lead the top card from your sequence in your long suit, but Partner having pre-empted, therefore showing 7 cards and in principle a nice suit, that is where lies the best chance of establishing. Score: 10/20

Watch out, if you had to lead a club, it would be the Jack. Yes, you lead your fourth-best, but don’t forget the exception of the top-of-sequence lead, whenever possible, which is given priority. Score: 5/20

No reason to lead the opponents’ suit. Score: 0/20

  1. Even with that lead, are you not reliant on your Partner ducking the first trick (playing the Jack) to bring down the contract ? Whether West plays Q or 2, if Partner wins your lead with the A, is not Declarer certain to make 9 tricks ?
