2020 will be a highly eventful year for the bridge world! To get a clearer picture of what is in store, we asked our expert Jérôme Rombaut for advice. What are the players and teams to follow in 2020? Which competitions are not to be missed? Jérôme tells us everything.

Bridge events not to be missed in 2020

Jérôme Rombaut’s expectations for 2020

2020 promises to be an incredible year for bridge! Some teams are under pressure, others have made the choice to reinvent themselves. It is a good omen for bridge.

The events to follow

To make sure you don’t miss the best matches, you should focus on these events:

  • 3rd EUROPEAN WINTER GAMES
  • 55th EUROPEAN NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • NABCs
  • 18th WORLD YOUTH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • 2020 WORLD BRIDGE GAMES

Who are the favourites?

During these international competitions, keep an eye on the favourites: Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and Poland. I will personally follow the Norwegian pair Brogeland/Lindquist who was very impressive last year.

On the women’s side, 2020 will also be a year of challenges, especially for the Swedes who will have to confirm the good performance achieved in 2019.

Finally, among the next generation of bridge players (U21), you should follow Israel, Sweden and France (possibly with my son if he is selected to the national team).

The teams to follow

2020 will see changes for some bridge players who have decided to renew their teams. If you want to know if they will win their bets, here are my suggestions:

Regarding USA, Fleisher and Nickel have decided to welcome new players in their teams. It will be interesting to see their results at NABCs, their major challenge.

A new French-American pair is born. Indeed, the French Thomas Bessis will now be playing with the American Justin Lall. New partner means new habits. Will they be ready in time for the big competitions?

Lastly, the biggest surprise of early 2020 is that Switzerland has welcomed Zimmerman back to their team. The other bridge players who will be Piotr Gawrys, Michal Klukowski, Sjoert Brinkb et Bas Drijver.

Now you know everything about the teams, players and events to follow in 2020. But like me, keep an active interest in the results of all matches because my instinct is telling me that this year will be full of surprises…
