I. Frequently Asked Questions

I.1 Is Funbridge free?


The software Funbridge is free. In order to have a complete access to all its features you must however subscribe and become a Premium member. The button “Register” or “Extend my membership” on the Welcome page of the software gives you a large view of the different membership options available and their prices. You can also access this page by clicking here.

At your first registration to Funbridge and once your email address has been validated (see step by step), your account will be credited with 1 month of Premium membership. You will thus be able to test each option of this game.

Being a non Premium member of FunBridge (free membership) gives you access to only 4 competition tournaments every 2 weeks.
Being a Premium member of FunBridge gives you access to the whole 100 tournaments wich are available every 2 weeks, as well as to the 20 hands daily tournaments and the unlimited number of training tournaments.

I.2 Opponent: human or computer?


On Funbridge, you will play the South hand, while computers will play the North, East, and West hands.
This way of dispaching hands is applied to all tables, which provides easy and right comparisons between you and the other players.

This is a tremendous advantage since it enables you to play your tournaments when you want to and at your own pace.

I.3 Does Funbridge require an Internet connection?


Yes, you need a permanent connection to the Internet.

I.4 Does Funbridge work on a Mac?


Funbridge was not designed to work under the Macintosh environment. However, Funbridge may run on a Mac with some Windows emulating softwares.

I.5 What level of play is requested to play on Funbridge?


As long as you know how to play bridge, Funbridge is made for you. Funbridge offers all level of play from beginner to expert (world class). Furthermore, the ranking system allows you to compare yourself to players of your level.


II. Funbridge, how it works

II.1 Tournament format


There are three tournament formats on Funbridge:

Tournaments called "Playing in your serie".
They are accessible by clicking on the button “Playing in your serie". They are composed of four deals. 100 different deals are available every 15 days. These tournaments establish the general ranking of all participants and group players by level of play.

Daily tournaments.
They are accessible by clicking on the button “Tournament of the day”. They are composed of 20 deals. As the name suggests, only one daily tournament takes place each day and is opened to each player who wish to take part to it, regardless of his level of play.

Practice tournaments.
They are accessible by clicking on the button “Training". They are composed of a one and only deal. An unlimited number of these practice tournaments is available. They are exactly the same for all players, regardless of their level of play.

II.2 Percentage computation on a deal and a tournament


How is computed a deal percentage?
On each deal you play, you get a percentage value ranging from 0% to 100%.
0% means that you are the only one having the lowest score possible.
50% means that there are as many players having a better score than you as players having a worse score than you.
100% means that you are the only one to have achieved the best score

Percentage computation details:
We first set the highest value possible, which represents the number of players taking part to the tournament less 1 point.
This value is assigned to the best player.
Then, this value minus one point is assigned to the second best player.
And so on ... up to the last player.
If two players tied for the same rank, we add their ranking points and we divide them by the number of tied players, so that each player get the same ranking point value.
Once this has been done, we convert the score to a percentage by multiplying the ranking points by 100 and dividing the result by the maximum ranking point value.

Example for a nine-players tournament:
Results are 1 with 650, 4 with 620, 2 with 170, 1 with 140, and 1 with 110.
The player whose score is 650 gets 8 points. Which means (8*100)/8 = 100%
The 4 players tied to 620 get (7+6+5+4)/4 = 5.5 points. Which means (5.5*100)/8 = 68.75%
The next two players tied to 170 get (3+2)/2 = 2.5 points. Which means (2.5*100)/8 = 31.25%
The player whose score is 140 gets 1 point. Which means (1*100)/8 = 12.5%
Finally, the player whose score is 110 gets 0 point. Which corresponds to (0*100)/100 = 0%

Tournement percentage computation:
All tournaments are composed of 4 deals. The percentage average for each tournament will be used to establish the ranking.

What happen if a player does not play some tournaments during the current month?
He won't be credited with any penalty. However, he must play at least five tournaments during the current month.

II.3 Ranking, bonus, and groups


There are 20 groups on Funbridge ranging from Elite, the highest on, to four Clubs, the lowest one:
Elite, 1S, 1H, 1D, 1C, 2NT, 2S, 2H, 2D, 2C, 3NT, 3S, 3H, 3D,3C, 4NT, 4S, 4H, 4D, 4C.
S=Spade
H=Heart
D=Diamond
C=Club
NT=No trumps

Players repartition in those 20 groups is made according to a percentage value; with the exception of the Elite group, for which the number of players is fixed and set to 50.

To those 20 groups, 2 other groups are added:
-New: this group is composed of all new players on Funbridge.
-Non Premium: this group is composed of all players who are non-premium.

The ranking is established at each period end.
A period lasts 15 days, running from the 1st to the 15th day of the month, and from the 16th to the end of the month.
To be ranked, a player must have played at least 5 tournaments of your series during the current period.
Any Premium player who did not play his 5 tournaments of his series during the current period goes down in the lower group.
You have to play at least 25 tournaments to hope go up in the higher group in the end of the period (15 days).
Exceptions:
- in the 4C series, non premium and new members: 5 tournaments are enough to pretend to the higher serie.
- in the Elite serie: you have to play 25 tournaments to hope kept in this serie.

Non premium members are in the non premium serie.

A new player on Funbridge will be included to the group of new players. At the end of the period, he will then move on to the appropriate group based on his ranking but if and only if he has played at least 5 tournaments of his series during this same period.

At the end of each period:
In each series, the amount of players who move up to a higher group (series) equals 20% of the amount of players standing in this higher group.
For example: you are in the series 4C and there are 100 players in the series 4P: 20 players will move up from the series 4C to the series 4P.
The amount of players who move down to a lower group equals 20% of the amount of players standing in this same group.
For example: you are in the series 4P and there are 100 players standing in this series. At the end of the period, 20 players of the series 4P will move down to the series 4C.

Caution, since the 1st of July 2008, a player who is Premium during the whole period and who did not connect to Funbridge at least once, will not move down to a lower group (except for Elite serie). Players who are in this particular case to not belong to the 20% of players who move down in a lower serie.

Any connection to Funbridge software during a period cancels the previous rule. We consider that since a player can connect to Funbridge, he is able to play the number of tournament required to hope to be maintained in his/her series.


Of course, a player cannot move down from group 19 (4C) or move up from Elite group.

A non-Premium player, who is thus playing in the non-premium group, and who decide to subscribe to a Premium membership will move (up or down) to the group which corresponds to his results just as if he was playing in the New Player group.

Bonus
The bonus system rewards players who have played the highest number of competition tournaments.
For each 10 tounrmants played, we do not take into account the two tournaments getting the worst whose percentage.
(NB: the 4 worst among your 20 tournaments and not the 2 worst among the first 10 tournaments and the 2 worst among the following 10 tournaments)



Ranking points in IMP points
In the Bridge game, there are two different notations:
- Marking percentage called scoring pairs corresponding to tournaments where many players play same deals and where the goal is to achieve a better score than the other players
- IMP that the notation is rather reserved for tournament team whose goal is to achieve the largest possible gap compared to other players

Example :
You play 3NT with a 9-raising head (already bought), pairs tournament, you should try to make an additional waiver (sometimes at risk to drop the contract) whereas IMP scoring, we will simply lifted the 9 s If there is any risk of falling by trying to make an additional.

Details :
If your opponent has 3SA equal: + 600 pts, performing 3NT +1 (+ 630 pts), you will make a difference of 30 points, a gain of 1 IMP. Note however, if you fall, your score would be - 100 pts, the difference will be 700 points and you lose 12 IMP.

The above table is used as it is when comparing these 2 teams and for example, a gap of 30 points on a deal is far from 1 IMP.
But when the comparison is done on hundreds of players like on Funbridge, then comparing each result to the "average score" of the deal. While it is possible that gaps are different but the same score in IMP for some players not having the same score in points, for example:
tournament n°247135, average score: 205

Player X : score 630 gives a difference of 425 (630-205)
Player Y : score 660 gives a difference of 455 (660-205)

The 2 gaps 425 and 455 fall within the same range: 420 -> 490 = 10 IMP

Note that this calculation is that used by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) and the French Bridge Federation (FFB).

II.4 Awards


Following each period, prizes are awarded as follow:
1 account is selected at random among the ones including a picture: he wins 10 days of Premium membership.
The best player in each group: wins 10 days of Premium membership.
The closest player to 55% withoutexceeding it (effective for each group): wins 5 days of Premium membership.

Conditions to be eligible to receive the award for the best player and the closest player to 55% without exceeding it at the end of the period: the player must have completed at least 10 tournaments. If the winner is an Ambassador (thus lifetime membership), the award will not be transferable.

II.5 Explained deals


Explained deals are deals specially compiled to show difficulties of the betting and the card play. The betting round and the card play are cut down and commented by Jérôme Rombaut (Europe Champion and France Team Member 2002-2005)
Explained deals are separate from the Funbridge Premium membership and can be bought by batch of 5 minimum. A list of the whole explained deals avaiblable is available by clicking on the button “Explained deals” in the software.

II.6 You have a firewall software


The process is the same on different softwares like Norton Internet Security, Kaspersky or Bit Defender.
We aim to allow Funbridge in the control pannel of your firewall, you should search how with the online documentation and online support of the firewall software.
To put your firewall in average or maximum filtering will probably block Funbridge even if you have set as allow.
If you can't resolve this problem, contact us now.

II.7 The trick stays in the middle of the table


You have just to click on the trick or to press Enter on your keyboard.
Some other options are available, like sounds configuration.

II.8 Log in to member area or forum


In Internet Explorer, click on Tools (in the grey toolbar on the top), then click on Internet Options.
Click on the tab named Security of the new window, and click on the "Default Level" button.
Submit this configuration by clicking on "Ok" on each window which will close automatically.
This security option is enough to protect your computer and allow you to identify on web sites.

II.9 Blank page when trying to subscribe


In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" (in the grey toolbar above) and then on "Internet options".
A new window opens up: click on the tab "Advanced" and tick off the box "Show friendly http error messages"
Validate this choice by clicking on "OK" on each window which will be automatically closed.
Try again to pursue your subscription.
If the problem persists, please contact the support department by filling in this form and describing your problem.

III. The Open Tournaments

III.1 Definition


The Open Tournaments are tournaments with a fixed length, so that in most case, you have access to the results and tournament ranking immediately after you completed it. The Open Tournaments on Funbridge are accessible from the "Open Tournaments" button in the Funbridge software main page.

III.2. Open Tournaments Types


There are 2 different types of Open Tournaments on FunBridge:

III.2. A. Classic

A Classic Open Tournament is in fact a "traditional" tournament mostly characterized by a fixed starting date and time established by the tournament creator. The minimum number of players in a classic tournament is 3

III.2. B. Sit'n Go

A Sit & Go Open tournament is a tournament that will start not at a given date and time but when the requested number of participants is reached. The tournament creator set the number of players required to start it. When the number of registrant is reached, the tournament starts.

III.2. C. Open Tournament characteristics


The common characteristics that all Open Tournaments share are define by the tournament creator. They are:

- Number of deals: This is the number of deal in a tournament. For the limited tournaments, it is the number of deal per round that is established, the number of round depends on the number of players registered.
- Ranking mode: Pair or IMP points
- Game engine: Funbridge or WBridge5
- Who may play in the tournament: This is defined by the tournament creator that can set the tournament to be available only to players in his friends list, to players having a password defined by the creator, or players of a given group. (The creator could, for example, set the tournament to be accessible only to players in group higher than 2 Club and lower than 1 Club).

III.3. How to create an Open Tournament


To be able to create an Open Tournament, you must be a Funbridge Premium member. Click the "Create a Tournament" button to start the tournament creation process. This is done in 3 steps:

Step 1:

In this step you set:
-The name of the tournament (not mandatory).
-The tournament type: Classic or Sit & Go.
-The game engine that will be use by the computer players.
-The ranking type; by pair or IMP.
-Minimum and maximum series that can play the tournament.
-Tournament accessibility: All players (To All), players on your Funbridge friends list (My friends), or if a password is required to play in the tournament (Password). In this case, input the tournament password in the appropriate field and confirm it.

Step 2:

In this step you set:
-Starting date and time of your tournament.
-Number of deals
-Time allowed (in minute) per deal or the time length for the whole tournament. (Exception made of limited tournament where you set the number of deals in a round and the round length)
-Minimum and maximum number of players that have to pre-register in the tournament: if you select this option this means that a player must be registered before the tournament starts to be able to play in it. If not selected, a player will be able to register in the tournament after its start time.

Last step : confirmation of tournament creation

This last step displays the configuration summary of your tournament and able you to confirm definitely its creation or to cancel it.

III.4. How to play in an Open Tournament


To play in an Open Tournament, click the "Open Tournament" button in the Funbridge main page.
The Open Tournament Window will show the following tabs: "Available", "My tournaments", "Completed Tournaments" and "Advertise".

-"Available": This tab shows all tournaments either ongoing or to come.
-"My tournaments": This tab shows the tournaments that are over, ongoing or upcoming and that you are registered in.
-"Completed Tournaments": This tab shows the Open Tournaments that are over.
-"Advertise": This tab enables you to advertise your next tournament or its results. Funbridge reserve its right to modify the advertisement as this space can be seen by all players.

More about the tabs:

"Available": The tournaments will be listed in this tab. The default sorting will be done on starting date.
You may sort on other criteria by clicking the column header. For example if you click the "Deals" header, the tournament list will be sorted on the numbers of deals in them.
For each line of the list, a button will enable you to register (Registration) in a tournament or get in (Play) a tournament that is already running.
To register to a tournament you only need to click the "Register" button and confirm your registration.
The registered players list to a tournament will be displayed in the registration window.

"My tournaments": Displays a list of the tournaments that you are registered in, that you have played, that are ongoing or upcoming.
Note: The tournaments that you are registered in will appear in the "Available" and "My tournaments" tabs and you will be able to play them by clicking the "Play" button.

"Completed Tournaments": This tab will display the tournaments that are done. The detail section at the bottom shows the details of the tournament you have selected in the list, by clicking it in the list. It will display the ranking.

"Advertise": At the bottom of this tab there is an input field where you can type in your message and display it in the "Advertise" tab. Input your message and click "Send" to publish it. You will see many buttons below the window: "Help", "Close", "Open Ranking", "Create a Tournament". More about those:

"Close": Close the Open Tournament window and return to the main page.
"Open Ranking": Shows the general ranking of the Open Tournaments, based on the ELO.
"Create a Tournament": Enable you to create an Open Tournament on Funbridge. (Avalable to Premium members only)

III.5. Cases of withdrawal in Open Tournaments


We dissociate 2 cases for withdrawals in Open Tournaments: at 2 players or at more than 2 players.

2 players:
A player doe not play a deal or makes withdrawal on a deal:
In pairs: 0% for him, 100% for his opponent if he has played
If none of both play the deal: 0% for both
By IMP: -12 for one, +12 for the other

More than 2 player:
A player doe not play a deal:
In pairs: 25% for the player
By IMP: – 6 IMP

A player makes withdrawal on a deal:
In pairs: 0% for the player
By IMP: – 24 IMP

In case of a tournament at many players, if a player is alone to play the deal, we give him 75% and not 50%.

III.6. ELO ranking in Open Tournaments


The ELO ranking is usually used for the chess ranking. We have adapted it on Open Tournaments on Funbridge.

To make it easy, you have to know that ELO ranking is based on players experience (number of played deals on Funbridge) and that an average player will have a ELO of 1500 points. More your ELO is high, more your level is strong. You start also with 1500 ELO points.

The calculation of Elo is still done by comparing two players. Because the Open tournaments are open to more than two players, we apply the Elo formula for each possible duel in the tournament, and we divide the result by the number of registered players minus 1.

Example with a tournament with 4 players: A, B, C, et D.
Suppose you are Player A. We apply the Elo formula by comparing yourself to each player of the tournament. This gives the calculation of ELO on the following duels:
A compared to B
A compared to C
A compared to D
The sum of Elo points obtained is then divided by three to determine the number of ELO points marked on the deal.

In case of equality between two players A and B: we calculate for A the number of ELO points he would scored if he had won, the Elo points he would have lost if he had he lost, and we make the difference between the two scores. We consider that the player with an Elo lower, in case of equality, merit to score points.
